Statutory Accident Insurance

Have you had an accident in connection with your studies at ESCP? Fortunately, in Germany, statutory accident insurance covers the costs of medical treatment resulting from certain accidents related to your studies.

When are you covered by statutory accident insurance?

Statutory accident insurance – rather than your health insurance – covers accidents that occur in the following circumstances:

  • An accident on the direct route to or from campus or an ESCP event
  • An accident on campus or during an ESCP event
  • An accident during a sports activity, provided that it takes place as part of an ESCP event (see section below for exclusions; not all ESCP-related sports events are covered)
  • An accident while using the ESCP library
  • An accident during ESCP excursions or study trips, both in Germany and worldwide

As an ESCP student on Berlin campus, you are insured through the Unfallkasse Berlin if the accident occurs in connection with your studies. Further information is available on the Unfallkasse Berlin website or here.

When are you NOT covered by statutory accident insurance?

For some of our ESCP sports offers, accident insurance is provided through the respective sports club, while for others, students may only be covered by their own health insurance.

Our cooperating sport clubs where accident insurance is included in club membership:

  • Siemensstadt Sports Club (football and basketball)Collegia e. V. (rowing): Students are members of the club and are covered by its insurance.
  • Collegia e. V. (rowing)

If you are injured in an accident during your private or leisure time, your health insurance is responsible for covering the costs (not the Unfallkasse Berlin).

This includes, for example:

  • Excluded ESCP-related sports activities, including participation in ESCP teams in the TU or FU Liga, the Urban Sports Club membership offered as part of the Berlin Sports benefits program, and sports activities organized by student societies where ESCP does not have organizational responsibilityStudy-related activities carried out outside the university, such as study groups or self-study at home
  • Study-related activities carried out outside the university, such as study groups or self-study at home
  • Privately organised study trips or sport events
  • Private activities on university premises, such as having lunch in the canteen

What does statutory accident insurance cover?

Statutory accident insurance supports your recovery and your return to everyday life by providing all appropriate measures and benefits. These include:

  • Medical treatment: This includes medical care, medication and therapeutic treatment, as well as transport and travel expenses related to treatment.
  • Vocational and social rehabilitation: This may include technical aids for work or study, assistance with vehicle or housing adaptations, and integration grants.
  • Financial benefits: Depending on the circumstances, these may include injury benefits in the event of loss of income, transitional benefits during vocational rehabilitation, pensions in cases of permanent health impairment, and benefits for surviving dependants.

What should you do if you have an accident?

If you have an accident that may be covered by statutory accident insurance:

  1. Report the accident to ESCP, preferably to your Programme Office.
  2. See a specialised accident doctor (Durchgangsarzt or D-Arzt). A D-Arzt specialises in occupational, commuting and educational accidents. You do not need to present your European health insurance card (EHIC) or provide details of your private health insurance. Simply inform the medical staff that the accident occurred in connection with your studies at ESCP. The D-Arzt will determine what further treatment is required and, if necessary, arrange a referral to a specialist or hospital.
  3. The treatment is billed directly to the responsible statutory accident insurance provider.
  4. No case or claim number is issued to students by the Unfallkasse Berlin.
  5. Students are registered with the Unfallkasse Berlin by their name and date of birth. These details can also be used to report any health problems or long-term consequences that arise at a later date as a result of the accident.

How to find a specialised accident doctor (Durchgangsarzt or D-Arzt)

You can search for an accident doctor at the websites from the German accident insurance or at Doctolib.
